MTG Alpha 40ish, update

The Alpha 40 rules have changed. The format is even better now.

I updated my Alpha 40-ish decks accordingly and also built new ones. The idea is still the same: These decks are not built for competition but for fun friendly evenings with friends.

New Rules

Mono Black

For a short time I ran Ian Braun's list from his January 2022 Alpha 40 League Championship Deck report.

It is a powerful deck. Too strong actually and quite frustrating when it opens with two Sinkhole. I nerfed it by replacing the Sinkholes with Bad Moons.

Purple Rain

Purple rain had to lose its Time Walk to keep its Ancestral Recall according to the new rules. I added Fork which is always fun to play.

I also increased the number of Shatter to give it a change against Pink Vise. Perhaps I could cut one to have an extra fireball.

Artillery

A good strong deck inspired by Dennis Kurze who won 2024 European Alpha 40 in Germany. Suffered from the same problem as Ian Braun's deck (too powerful). Once the combo Orc/CoP is assembled it is way too strong and boring to play against.

I am trying an alternative build, still with artillery, inspired by Valerio Gregori's list who won FB league with it.

Hulk

The previous iteration of the Hulk deck was a good fun deck but kinda repetitive, relying soly on Elves, Growth, and Berserk. This build is a bit more diversified. And also including the Jugg is cool. Nothing feels like a good as a Berserked Jugg. Except perhaps a Berserked Force of Nature.

Channel Fireball

Channel Fireball is almost exactly the list from Stephen Menendian at eternalcentral 2020. I added an extra bolt and remove the Disrupting Scepter in favor of a Hurricane.

Le Deck

Le deck is the second worse deck to play against (after Pink Vise). It has access to many of the powerful cards like Balance, Time Walk, Geyser. Not entirely sure about Copy artifact. Still evaluating it.

Gueddon

I always wanted to give a try Green/White. It is a nice consistent deck, able to hold its own against all the others.

Pink Vise

The abomination lives on. I am not sure why I have not unbuilt this deck yet. Perhaps it is like the Stasis decks. It helps appreciating other decks.
